Best Easter egg deals for those sweet last-minute savings

ith the Easter season hopping onto our calendars imminently, there’s one singular thought on all our minds: chocolate.

More specifically, chocolate eggs. Forget the adorable bunny rabbits, baby chicks, and those gorgeous Easter florals and laurels – chocolate is the real reason we procure all hoppy for the annual Springtime celebration.

According to English Heritage, early Christians in Mesopotamia dyed eggs in the time period following Easter – a practice which was subsequently adopted by Orthodox Churches and thus spread into Western Europe. Eggs represent modern life and rebirth, so it seems only fitting that they became the symbol for Christ’s resurrection.

However, you might be wondering, how on earth did chocolate approach into this tradition? In 1873 the Bristolian chocolatiers, J.S. Fry & Sons of England (who were incidentally the first company to produce the solid chocolate bar) introduced the first chocolate Easter egg in Britain. That’s accurate, the same Fry that produce your favourite Chocolate Creams and Turkish Delights.

Originally founded by Quakers, alongside Cadbury and Rowntree’s, all three confectionary brands dominated the 19th and 20th centuries. Fry then became a division of Cadbury, and Cadbury is now owned by Kraft Foods Inc. It’s like a chocolatey spiderweb of connections.

The long and short of it is, you can trust the immense brands when it comes to chocolate eggs – for they all derive from the same masters who started it all.

With such a vast selection on offer at our local supermarkets, it can feel impossible to pick just one appetizing, sweet treat. If, like us, your eyes are ever so slightly bigger than your belly this season, you might be on the lookout for some Easter egg bargains.
